AVID APPLICATION

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

AVID is a nationwide program designed to prepare students who are academically in the middle who have demonstrated the potential to succeed in a college preparatory path for admission to and success at four-year universities and colleges. Because the undergraduate applicant pool is so competitive at four-year colleges, the classes that a student takes become much more critical during the selection process. We realize the need to give all students every opportunity to gain access into these schools and into the more advanced classes offered here at Cerro Villa Middle School. Thus, we are committed to not only enrolling our students in honors, but also supporting them to be successful in them. This course is designed to support students to: succeed in a rigorous high school preparatory program, enter the mainstream activities of Cerro Villa Middle School, prepare for admission and success in high school, and become an educated, responsible participant and leader in their school and beyond what AVID students do in the AVID elective class.

OBJECTIVES

  • Provide academic instruction and other support to students and to prepare them for success in rigorous courses
  • Increase academic and social skills
  • Improve critical thinking skills
  • Motivate students to seek a college education
  • Increase student levels of career and college awareness
  • Explore various career paths

WHO MAY PARTICIPATE?
Students who have the desire as well as the potential to attend a four-year college or university and have: appropriate classroom behavior, at least a 2.5 GPA, good attendance habits, high motivation, good work ethic; are willing to commit themselves to a minimum of two hours of homework each night and are seeking an opportunity to take honors courses.

CURRICULUM
We focus on expanding skills that are needed the most in high school and in college: writing, using Cornell note-taking strategies, asking questions, working in groups, organization, time management, developing success strategies, and goal setting. Discussion topics include current events and issues relating to pre-teens. Leadership skills will be encouraged and developed. In addition, students will participate in extracurricular activities and community service.

COLLEGE/CAREERS
Students in the AVID class have the opportunity to explore their own interests and skills, then pair those with careers that match their unique qualities. AVID students also learn about different aspects of high school and college with a focus on independent study skills, inquiry, and the power of collaborative learning.

TUTORIALS
AVID hires current college students to help our students succeed in their academic classes. Students will participate in tutorial groups twice a week to review difficult material or to study for upcoming tests.

FIELD TRIPS
Students in the AVID program take field trips to colleges and other places of educational and cultural interest to make what we study in class more meaningful.
